 | Basic sources of fresh water are lakes, rivers and underground reservoirs and aquifers. Water available in nature is not sufficiently pure and cannot be used for human consumption or in industry, without some form of treatment.
While in contact with ground, on the earth's surface and even air, it becomes contaminated with solids in suspension or in solution., e.g. clay particles, vegetable waste, living organisms (plankton, bacteria, virus), various salts, organic matter and gases.
Because of the large number of different kinds of impurities, water must be treated before use to make it suitable for its intended application or after use in order to avoid harming the environment.
